ES096 Intermediate ESL

Practice and review in the four language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) with a study skills focus (note-taking outlining, vocabulary enhancement, etc).
Prerequisite: department placement test.

ES097 Advanced ESL

A continuation of ES 096 with an emphasis on more sophisticated writing structures and longer academic readings.
Prerequisite: ES 096 or department placement exam.

ES098 Tutorial in Writing

Taken in conjunction with Freshman Seminar. Individual work contracted with the ESL instructor on specific writing and reading problems as they affect composition work in the seminar.
Prerequisite: permission of the ESL instructor and department placement test.

ES099 Tutorial in Oral English

Independent study in listening comprehension and pronunciation through language lab work. Supervised by ESL instructor.
Prerequisite: department placement and permission of the ESL instructor.

Articles (A/An/The)


Some helpful rules
  1. Use (a/an) with a singular count noun.
  2. Use (the) when the noun has already been discussed.
  3. Use (the) with "in the morning/afternoon/evening."
  4. Use (the) when the noun is made specific by a prepositional phrase.
  5. Use (the) with names of colleges and universities that contain the word "of."
  6. Use (the) in the names of countries that contain the words united, union, kingdom, or republic.
  7. Use (the) with the superlative degree (most/-est).
  8. Use (the) with ordinal numbers.
  9. Use (the) with the names of rivers, oceans, seas, and deserts.
  10. Use (the) with plural names.
  11. Use (the) with family names followed by a noun.
  12. Use (the) with the names of hotels, motels, theaters, bridges, and buildings.
  13. Use (the) with the names of zoos, gardens, museums, and companies.
  14. Use (the) when the noun refers to something that is the only one in existence.
  15. Use (the) with large historic time periods.
  16. Use (the) with the word "same."
  17. Do not use (a/an) with plural nouns.
  18. Do not use (a/an) with non-count nouns.
  19. Do not use an article with the names of streets, avenues, roads, lanes, or boulevards.
  20. Do not use an article when generalizing about abstract nouns.
  21. Do not use an article with the names of universities or colleges.
  22. Do not use an article with the names of countries, cities, or states.
  23. Do not use (the) with the comparative degree (more/-er).
  24. Do not use an article for the names of single lakes, mountains, islands, or canyons.
  25. Do not use an article with the names of languages or religions that have not been made specific by a prepositional phrase.
  26. Do not use an article with the names of diseases except (the flu / the measles / the mumps.)

Preposition Problems



A preposition connects one part of speech with another.

That book (on) the table is mine.

When a preposition combines with a noun or pronoun, the combination is called a prepositional phrase.

We are (in a classroom).

A preposition of place is used in a prepositional phrase to indicate where a person, place, or thing is located.

Some place prepositions are (in, at, and on).

Some General Rules

In Used with a place that is enclosed.

Or with

a country Jorge lives in Peru.
a state Mary used to live in New York.
a county He lives in Greene County.
a city Barbara lives in Pittsburgh.
a year He was born in 1356.
a month In May, the students will graduate.


At Used with a specific area or place.

Or with

a number & street He lives at 265 Main Street.
a time We eat lunch at 11:30.


On Used to suggest the surface of something.

Or with

a street The University is on Main Street.
a coast A hurricane hit the west coast.
a river He took a cruise on the Nile.
a ship He went on a ship in September.
a train He read a novel on the train.
a plane We saw a movie on the plane.
a day On Friday, we will have a picnic.
a date School starts on September 3.
