Business Administration

Overview

The Master of Business Administration is designed to create a learning community interested in the advanced study of business and management. All degree candidates will be expected to refine their critical thinking skills, enhance their oral, written, and quantitative communication skills and become effective change agents. Five perspectives are addressed in each course: human resource implications, how organizational practices influence the marketplace, the managerial and leadership abilities necessary to function effectively in the workplace, issues of global economy, and ethical concerns. Particular attention is paid to the environment, responsible use of authority and the awareness of business practice on the greater social environment. Faculty are committed to highlighting the needs of women in management and to emphasizing gender issues.

Educational Objectives

The educational objectives of the Master of Business Administration are to ensure that students are:

Accelerated Program

The program is designed in accordance with adult education models which stress: focused study, accelerated learning with emphasis on life/work experience, integration of theory and practice, collaborative learning, and applied teaching techniques (case studies, simulations, analysis of work situations). The program is designed to be completed in as little as one year through continuous, accelerated study. Classes meet one day per week for four hours. Each course is eight weeks long. Students are expected to own or have access to a computer.

The interactive and accelerated nature of the program make class attendance an essential part of the learning process. In case of absence, students must make up all missed work requested by the faculty. Absences, partial attendance, and late assignments may affect student grades as specified in each course syllabus.

Assessment Criteria

Qualifications of Candidates
A candidate admitted into the master's program must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. An undergraduate major in business, management, or a related field or work experience which is comparable to this academic preparation is preferred. Other majors will be considered; prerequisites may be necessary. Prior work experience is preferred.

Assessment Criteria
The business faculty will assess a candidate's appropriateness for the programs according to the following criteria:

  1. Completed Application form.

  2. Official transcripts of all course work to date.
A minimum grade point average of 3. 0 is commonly expected.

  3. Recommendation forms.
Applicants must submit three recommendation forms commonly written by a former instructor, employer and someone who can address the applicant's potential for leadership.

  4. A 2-4 page written personal statement.
The personal statement should focus on one's academic ability for graduate study, history of work experience, and professional goals. The personal statement is reviewed as a writing sample.

  5. A TOEFL score, if applicable.
Prospective students who are non-native speakers need to supply the institution with a score from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A score of 550 or higher is expected.

No one element determines the acceptance of an applicant to the degree program. Should an applicant have some weakness in a given area, the faculty may admit the applicant with the stipulation that prerequisite work be done in that area.

Application
Admission is open six(6) times throughout the year (at every eight week course start). Although Seton Hill operates on a rolling admission, students are encouraged to complete an application as early as possible. The Application for Admission, along with all required materials, must be completed and sent to the Office of Graduate and Adult Studies. Application materials include: completed application form, $30 application fee, official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work, three recommendation forms, and a two to four page written personal statement (and TOEFL, if applicable).

Admission Decision
Applications will be reviewed by the business faculty. Applicants can request an interview with a faculty member. Every attempt will be made to notify applicants of admissions decisions within two weeks of the completion of the application.
