Welcome to the Division of Humanities
THE HUMANITIES DIVISION includes majors in English, History and Political Science, Modern Languages (French and Spanish), Philosophy, and Religious Studies/Theology. Whether by writing a poem, analyzing historical diary pages, speaking French or Spanish with other students, relating Aristotle's Ethics or Politics to our own day, or experiencing the spirituality of Hildegarde of Bingen, students explore the worth, dignity and rights of people and their environment. The Humanities Division offers faculty and students broad learning experiences that enable understanding of human values, beliefs and feelings, and enhance specialization in a chosen discipline. In the context of a Catholic liberal arts college, it develops commitment to principles of justice and civic responsibility, as well as intellectual skills of independent thought and judgment, creative thinking, effective writing and speaking. In its community of scholars, the Humanities hopes to dedicate analytic and communicative skills developed in the classroom to civic life, wherever it may be.
