Services
Interlibrary Loan
Official Policies (Rev: November 8, 2006)
In providing service to students, faculty, and staff
of Seton Hill University, it is in the interest of all concerned to maximize
users' access to many different types of material as quickly and economically as
possible. Interlibrary loan is one way by which Reeves Library can achieve this.
This policy states the rules and procedures that the library uses to fulfill this service.
- Availability: Interlibrary loan service is available free
of charge to students, faculty, staff, and Sisters of Charity. Patrons with
accrued fines and fees or with revoked borrowing privileges do
not have ILL privileges.
- Materials: Format of items to be borrowed or lent
includes: books, videos, journal articles, CD’s, records
, and audio cassettes. All borrowed or lent material is subject to recall.
- Priority: Students will have top priority in request processing.
Service to the remaining patron groups will be in this order: faculty,
staff, and Sisters of Charity. Requests are processed as they are received.
It is not necessary to send a confirmation email to see if requests have been
received as they will not be acknowledged.
- Time periods: Forms must be completed properly.
Most requests will be sent within one to two days of submission.
Turn around time will vary according to circumstances. Patrons are
expected to adhere to policies, guidelines, and deadlines set by lending
libraries. Borrowers from Reeves Library are expected to do the same.
No
renewals for ILL books.
- Fines: $1.00 per day will be charged for late returns.
No ILL requests will be processed if a patron has outstanding ILL or library fines.
Borrowers are also responsible for any late charges levied by a lending
institution as well as those levied by SHU.
- Borrowing charges: Service on the first 15 requests per semester is
free to students, faculty, and staff. (The only exceptions occur if a faculty
member submits a written request to exempt a student from the free request limit
because of a research project. The faculty member must provide a written description
of the student’s project, with justification for the limit extension.) After 15 requests,
patrons will be charged for each
request, according to the cost the library incurs in obtaining it.
- Lending charges: Charges will be reciprocal with those of the borrowing
institution Libraries offering free ILL service will be given free ILL service.
- Lost items: If a patron from SHU loses an ILL book, he/she must relinquish
all ILL borrowing privileges until the item is returned or the lending library is
appropriately reimbursed. Patrons are responsible for any ILL materials they use.
- Data collection: Statistics will be kept on ILL for
financial management and collection development.
- Copyright: Compliance of copyright laws is expected.
- Staff: Public Services and Periodicals Librarians are in charge of the ILL process.
Other staff members may assist, as well. Student aides may also be involved in
ILL processing, under the supervision of the Public Services Librarian.
- Notification: This policy will be posted in the library and on the library
home page. Copies available upon request.
