The Theatre program offers a major in Theatre Arts which allows a student to choose a second major or minor in another discipline, or to select an emphasis in:
- Theatre Performance
- Music/Theatre
- Technical Theatre
- Theatre/Management
- Theatre/Education
Each emphasis leads to the BA degree.

THEATRE
SCHOLARSHIPS To major in the Theatre Program a student must first apply and be admitted to Seton Hill University. Acceptance into the Theatre program is based upon the successful completion of an audition or portfolio review and interview, which enable the applicant to compete for theatre scholarships. Scholarship recipients are announced on or about March first of each year, so schedule your interview audition/portfolio review to occur before February 28th if you would like to be considered for a Theatre Scholarship. |
The William Granger Ryan Memorial Scholarship
The William Granger Ryan Memorial Scholarship provides up to $1,000 as a one-year award in semester installments of $500 each. On the basis of audition and interview, the Program Faculty selects a qualified entering freshman who will major in Theatre Performance or Music/Theatre.
Theatre Arts Scholarships
Theatre Arts Scholarships provide up to $4,000 as a four-year award in annual installments of $1,000 each to two qualified freshman selected by Program Faculty on the basis of audition or portfolio review and interview and projected ability to meet the criterion for academic achievement.
Technical Theatre Scholarship
The Technical Theatre Scholarship for freshman provides up to $1,000 as a one-year award in semester installments of $500 each. On the basis of portfolio review and interview, the Program Faculty selects a qualified entering freshman who will major in Technical Theatre.

The Leo and Ruth Beitler Scholarship
The Leo and Ruth Beitler Scholarship provides a one-year award of variable sums in equal semester installments. On the basis of audition or portfolio review and interview, the Program Faculty selects a qualified freshman, transfer, or upperclass person who will major in the Theatre Program.
AUDITION OR PORTFOLIO REVIEW AND INTERVIEW
Auditions or portfolio reviews and interviews with facilities tours can usually be scheduled Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment September 15 through April 30. No appointments can be scheduled for evenings or weekends (because of rehearsal-production conflicts) or during breaks.

Audition or portfolio reviews may last about five minutes: the interview about forty-five minutes. Please allow additional time if you choose to schedule an admissions and financial aid interview and campus facilities tour on the same day.

Your audition or portfolio review will be conducted by the Program Chair or a delegated faculty member who will videotape your work for later viewing by program Faculty. The chair will notify you of the results within two weeks of your visit. Scholarship recipients are announced on or about March first. YOUR AUDITION...
...should include two blocked and thoroughly memorized pieces, each about one-and-a-half minutes long; the first selection should be a monologue from a full-length comedy or drama; the second selection may be another monologue of a contrasting type, a song from a musical (required of Music/Theatre applicants),a dance or mime routine, or a demonstration of another performance skill. Consult your teachers for suggestions. Songs must be performed with taped instrumental accompaniment; please bring your own player to the audition session.
YOUR PORTFOLIO...
...should contain drawings, drafting, renderings, production books, programs and/or photographs of the scenic, costume, make-up, stage management, or lighting work you may have done on past productions. Examples or photos of other artwork, carpentry or sewing are also welcome. It may take any form and be as unique as you are.
OR...
...if you cannot audition or present your portfolio in person, an alternative means to fulfill the requirement is to furnish a high-quality videotape of your work. All videotapes submitted become property of the Theatre Program and are, therefore, not returned. If you choose the video tape option, you may be granted conditional acceptance until your interview is completed no later than the first week of your first semester.
